Pairing history is not simultaneous connection
Headphones may remember several previously paired devices while connecting to only one at a time. Multipoint refers to maintaining more than one connection at once. Sony distinguishes these behaviors in its support documentation: some models remember multiple devices but still require switching the active connection. Look for an explicit simultaneous-connection feature rather than a large remembered-device count.
Write down the transition you want. For example, you might listen to laptop music and answer a phone call without opening Bluetooth settings. That is different from hearing two music streams mixed together. Multipoint should not be assumed to mix both sources or provide the routing flexibility of an audio mixer.
Test interruption and recovery
Pair the headphones with the two intended devices using the model’s instructions. Start music on the first, pause it, and start playback on the second. Then test an incoming call and the return to music afterward. Note whether playback resumes automatically, requires a button press, or stays paused. These small behaviors determine whether the feature feels convenient during an ordinary workday.
Also test what happens when one device sleeps or leaves range. A laptop application may retain its audio session even when you think it has stopped playing. If switching is inconsistent, close that application and repeat the test before resetting everything. Check whether the companion application provides a list of currently connected devices so you can see which two are occupying the available connections.
Choose for the actual pair of devices
Confirm that any feature you need remains available while multipoint is enabled. Codec choices, call handling, and application controls can differ by model and software version. Use the current guide for the exact headphones rather than an older review of a similarly named pair. A firmware change can also alter behavior, so keep a note of the version used during your initial test.
If one device is shared with other people, consider whether automatic reconnection will interrupt their playback or yours. It may be more convenient to remove that pairing and reconnect deliberately. Multipoint is useful when it reduces repeated connection work; it is less useful when it introduces unpredictable interruptions. Evaluate the handoff routine before the return window closes, using the same call and music applications you expect to keep using.
